Field Testing a Distribution Automation Scheme

This half-day session provides a hands-on technical demonstration of how to thoroughly test a distribution automation scheme using power system simulation combined with end-to-end testing. Distribution automation systems require complex testing to verify switching logic, fault isolation, and communications schemes for a variety of fault scenarios and system conditions. Testing IEDs and recloser controllers individually is often not sufficient for full system verification. Scheme testing with simultaneous injection into multiple IEDs is required in the lab and in the field. The communications infrastructure plays an important role in the effectiveness of the automation scheme, and field testing is often required prior to placing the system in service. RelaySimTest facilitates this with its capability of simulating power system faults, controlling multiple test sets from one PC, and enabling the creation of numerous test cases with automatic assessment criteria.
The live test setup will feature a G&W FLISR (Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration) scheme consisting of multiple IEDs and recloser controllers. These will be connected to a series of ARCO Recloser Controller Test Sets. The attendees will learn how to use RelaySimTest to create a system model, how to assign test sets to inject into specific IED’s, how to add test cases, and how to create automatic assessments.
